VAN-STOCK has run out the clock…

I have some fond memories of playing with Josh, especially the “Van-stock” chants when we played in Quebec. With such a catchy nick-name, you might think we were destined for great things… But alas… This is the nature of our sport and I hope Josh success with his next partner. The truth is that this team never really met its potential. Three main draw results over the course of a summer, we both agreed, just isn’t good enough for either of us.
I won’t extend too much of a “good luck” courtesy to Josh because I may have to battle him in two weeks at the national championships here in Toronto at Ash Bridges bay. Come on down and check it out. I will be teaming up with Chaim Schalk, last year’s champion who beat me in the final… You know what they say, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!” Besides, as you can see from the picture, Chaim, on the far left, is obviously a model. So, if you want to meet a model…

Having my girlfriend and her family along with my own family at the event made this one very special. As you can see by the photo above, my mom thinks she won the tournament… It is such a great feeling competing for your country and having your own special people there to support and encourage you. Thanks guys!!!

Some Hard Earned Wins

We are home from Beijing resting up and training with our coach, Mark Heese, for a week before we head off to Norway for our next grand slam tournament. Since my last entry we have played two tournaments, Prague and Beijing. Both results showed that we are maturing as a team and building confidence incrementally. The qualifier in Prague was very demanding. We had to win three matches in one day in order to advance to the main draw. One fairly easy match in the morning and two very gutsy performances in the afternoon, one of which went to a third set, against teams that have already been in the main draw this year gave us our first main draw result of the year. It was a very satisfying feeling, no doubt! Our main draw match up had us up against Brazil’s top team of Ricardo-Marcio the next morning and we had our chances to take the match at 17-17 and 17-16 in each respective set but fell short at the end. Falling into the losers bracket we were disappointed in our loss to Spain that pushed us out of the tournament.

We came home and started to prepare for Beijing, the first Grand Slam event of 2011. Arriving early was important in order to deal with the 12 hour time change. We had 5 days in the Chinese capital to get used to the heat, the time zone and to play a few matches against other teams that arived early. The night before the qualifier we learned that in order to qualify for the main draw, we would need to beat one fairly regular main draw team and then another team that has been a solid main draw team for about three years including one podium finish. We were excited!!

The next morning we showed up ready to compete and dominated our Swiss opponents. In the afternoon under the scorching Beijing heat we battled a hungry and expectant French team and took the first set 21-19. The second set went back and forth all the way up to 30-30 when Josh dug a line shot off my block with precision up to the net where I was able to turn and spike it down to give us a 31-30. The next play was the winner with my line block on the right sider. Main Draw Grand Slam!!!
Our work begins again tomorrow…
The next day we found ourselves in a pool (Grand Slams organize the main draw teams into 8 pools of 4 teams) with the same Brazilian team that we drew in Prague, Latvia who has been on the podium in the last year and the top Swiss team who finished Beijing on the podium. We were unable to beat any of our opponents during the course of the next two days and had to settle for knock-off shopping at the Beijing market.
Like every team, we have had some ups and downs over the past month. The important piece for us to pay attention to is the fact that we are slowly moving further into the tournaments and in the direction of better and better results.
Untill now we have played in 4 tournaments. In succession, our results have been; 41st, 33rd, 25th, and 25th in a Grand Slam.
Next is Norway.
Lets pack our viking attitude with us on this journey…
Take care and look for me again.

Yesterday was the qualification tournament for the FIVB event here in China. The draw the night before made it abundantly clear that we were in for a tough day against two very strong teams that would expect to beat us. Our first match was against Brazil’s 2008 Olympic silver medalist, Fabio, and his new partner, Billy Maciel, a great partner in his own right. Excited at this opportunity, Josh and I showed what I’ve known from day one when I asked Josh to partner up with me. We cruised to an overwhelming victory against the Brazilians 21-18, 21-13. One more win and we would be in the main draw. Our opponent in the afternoon was Estonia. Rivo Vesik (him and I refer to each other as long-lost brothers from birth -of course Im the better looking version…) competed in the Beijing Olympics and has since picked up a crafty defender, Karl. Once again Josh and I played solid defense with blocks and digs and a consistent sideout cruising to a 21-15 first set win. The second began in the same manor with us in complete control on defense and sideout. Estonia, however, chipped away and found their way back into the match with some great plays and improved sideout. They bettered our performance and after the dust settled, ended up on top.
There were a few painful hours spent last night before we went to bed. A lot of questions. Another slipped opportunity. Do we belong? What’s missing?
Choosing our response to this challenge will ultimately be what best prepares us for Prague FIVB in two weeks. Each moment spent in doubt chips away at our result in Prague because doubt lays the foundation for failure. Each moment spent in inspiration will build courage and strength and will prepare us for excellence in Prague. When I really see the truth in this, what choice do I really have?
My favourite song is Bob Segar’s “Like a Rock”. The lyrics confirm with me the kind of person that I want to be and when I am inspired and focused rather than distracted, this song seems to be humming in the back ground. I refer to it as my “anchor song”.
Jessica, my girlfriend, pointed me in the direction of that song on the phone last night. These moments now, when doubt is the easiest emotion to access, are the most important moments for Josh and I to be watchful of how we spend our time and where our thoughts wander. As every athlete instinctively knows, most of the work and certainly the most disciplined work is done off the court when you are simply living your day. These are the moments, if spent doing what is right, can truly contribute to success in Prague. To quote Bob, “I held firm to what I felt was right….like a rock”.

WOW
Its been a few days since we won the tournament in the Cayman Islands.
Randy Stoklos and Sinjin were there to present the trophies and it was great to spend time with them during the past week.
Although the trophy blew off the table and broke as soon as we received it, a win is a win nonetheless.
It was a tough performance under serious heat conditions and it was great to be atop the podium.
Ill be adding pictures and more to the story shortly…

I am extremely excited to announce a new partnership leading into the 2011 season.
Josh Binstock and I have recently confirmed that we will take up the challenges of the FIVB World Tour together. Josh is an outstanding player. Although his strong defense, great setting, ability to play both the left and right sides, and efficient side-out are what set him apart from other possible teammates, I am most excited about this partnership because of the level of intensity that he brings to the game of beach volleyball. Josh, plain and simple, loves to battle- needs to battle! His peers recognize him as someone who plays with grit and tenacity. His will to win has been evident by his back to back National Championships in 2008 and 2009, where he knocked Redmann and I out in the semi-finals.
Our size, Josh stands 6’5”, veteran experience, past successes and athleticism, we believe, give us a great chance to do some great things in 2011.
I look forward to documenting our challenges and successes in 2011.

The weather was great and the crowds on Sunday for the semis and finals were fantastic.
We battled through the 30 degree humid conditions all the way to the finals where we met our match against Reader and Schalk.
Here is a photo from one of our pool play matches where we were beaten by a well-prepared and passionate younger team of May-Schachter who ended up finishing a very respectable 5th! Sorry Sam, its my website, I choose the picture that goes up!
Its Time to Write about Volleyball…You Think???

I’ve spent the better part of the past 4 months on the road competing and have skillfully managed to dodge the task of writing about our volleyball games!
After a great 2009 when Redmann and I teamed up and surprised even ourselves with a top-10 World Champs and a Grand Slam 5th placing, we have taken our fair share of lumps this season. I think sophomore slump is more accurate than beginners luck… Here’s why:
Beginners luck would label a team that really isn’t that good but had a few bounces go their way and were able to surprise teams with an unfamiliar style of play. That just isn’t us! First of all, there’s nothing unfamiliar about our game. There are no surprises when coming up against me. I’ve been on this tour for 7 years, teams know what to expect. My meat and potatoes? Hit high and deep! Christian plays a typical style of volleyball for a small man: passes well, needs a good set, can hit the line or angle and sees the defense well enough to shoot the ball into the open area.

So, what’s the difference between 2009 and 2010? Whereas in 2009 we were winning the 16-14 games in the 3rd set, in 2010 we are losing in those moments. Is that luck? Nope! In 2009 we had nothing to lose. We were excited to be in the main draw or even the qualifier to have an opportunity to play. Our belief slowly built up during our 3rd week and we truly expected to win in those situations because we just knew that we were ready and able to score in the tight situations. As Henry Ford said, “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.”
2009 began with some tight losses that we fully believed we were going to win. This may have been the catalyst. Our belief in our side out started to slide and, naturally, so did our game. It’s been literally up and down moments of belief and lack of belief in our game that has typified our season. Once again, insert Mr. Ford’s quote.

So, how do we get it back?
Well, it has been “back”. Last week we played a nearly flawless match against Brazil and won 2-0. They went on to lose in a close match to go to the semi finals while we finished 17th. So, it was “back” and then it was gone. We also played great beating a top German team, but failed to win our match to advance further in our 17th place Moscow result.

Our task now is to live into the learning that we our doing with our sport psychologist, JP Pawliw-Fry. To not only be attentive to our job in each moment on the court, but to be attentive to our thinking when we are off the court. Off the court is the real work because this is when we spend the most time building our belief or lack of belief in our game. We know we are good enough, we’ve proven it. Now, its believing we will do it again!

We play tomorrow in the qualifier in Aland, Finland.
Another opportunity to do what I love!
